About this quiz
The idea of a “shadow” goes back to the psychologist Carl Jung: the parts of ourselves that we do not like, hide from others or barely notice. They are not evil. They are usually good qualities taken too far, or needs that never got a healthy outlet.
This quiz does not judge you. It asks how you behave when you are tired, hurt, cornered or tempted, and it uses the language of detective fiction to describe four common shadow types: The Controller, The Charmer, The Grudge-Keeper and The Escapist.
Read your result as a map, not a verdict. Knowing your villain makes it far easier to notice when it is steering, and to take the wheel back.
What this quiz measures
The shadow is the part of us we do not show, because we are not proud of it. This quiz is a light, entertaining look at four common shadow patterns: the controller, the charmer, the grudge-keeper and the escapist, and at what each one is really protecting.
How to read your result
Each of these patterns started as a useful defence. Control protects against chaos, charm against rejection, grudges against being hurt twice, and escape against being overwhelmed. Your result explains the original purpose and the price you pay for it today.
The 4 possible results
- The Controller: If you plan everything, nothing can go wrong. Your shadow is the need to manage everything: plans, people, outcomes. You are not cruel, you are afraid of chaos, and control feels like safety.
- The Charmer: You can get people to say yes, and you know it. Your shadow is persuasion. You read people well, you know what they want to hear, and at your worst you use that skill to get your way rather than to connect.
- The Grudge-Keeper: You forgive, but you never forget. Your shadow is the long memory. You notice slights, store them and quietly keep score. Your loyalty runs deep, and so does your sense of what is fair.
- The Escapist: When things get hard, you quietly leave. Your shadow is avoidance. You step away from conflict, tough decisions and uncomfortable feelings, through distraction, delay or disappearing for a while.
Tips for using your result
Treat the result with curiosity rather than shame. A shadow trait you can name is much easier to manage than one that runs in the background.
