Case file No. 001

The Manor Mystery

Lord Ashcombe is dead. Four people were in the house. One of them is lying.

The case

Ashcombe Manor stands alone on a hill, three miles from the nearest village. Tonight Lord Edmund Ashcombe, a wealthy man with a famously sharp temper, hosted a small dinner for the four people closest to him: his wife's sister, his doctor, his secretary and his oldest business partner. The rain that had lashed the windows all evening stopped at half past eleven. By then the mood at the table had already turned strange: an argument whispered over dessert, a chair pushed back too hard, a glass left untouched.

At 11:50 PM every light in the house went out. For five long minutes there was only darkness, the creak of old floorboards and somebody's footsteps in the hall. When the butler finally came with a candle, he found Lord Ashcombe slumped over his desk in the study, the clock smashed beside him. The study window was locked from the inside. The door was not.

Nobody has left the house. One of the four people waiting in the drawing room is a killer, and the other three are hiding something too.

How to play

Everyone in the house tells you something, but only one story does not fit the others. Question the suspects, watch for contradictions and compare what they say with the evidence on your board. You have six questions for twelve possible answers, so you cannot hear everything. Choose the questions that matter, and watch for the clue that does not fit.
